Garbage Disposal Troubleshooting
Jams, hums, and bad smells — the safe reset process and what not to put down the drain.
Appliances Plumbing Kitchen
Most disposal problems are jams or a tripped overload — both are fixable without a plumber.
It hums but doesn't spin (jammed)
- Turn the switch OFF and unplug or flip the breaker.
- Use the hex wrench that came with the unit — insert it into the bottom socket and rock it back and forth to free the jam.
- Remove the obstruction with tongs (never your hand).
- Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit.
- Restore power and test with cold water running.
It does nothing (tripped)
- Press the reset button on the bottom of the unit.
- Check the breaker in your panel.
- Check the outlet (GFCI) — press Test then Reset.
Bad smell
- Grind ice cubes and citrus peels to clean the blades.
- Pour a baking soda + vinegar mix, let sit, then flush with hot water.
- Keep the rubber splash guard wiped clean.
What never to put down a disposal
- Grease or oil — solidifies and clogs
- Fibrous foods — celery, onion skins, corn husks
- Starchy foods — pasta, rice, potato peels (swell and clog)
- Bones, fruit pits, coffee grounds
- Non-food items, paint, cleaning chemicals
When to call a pro
Persistent leaks from the bottom, a motor that spins but doesn't drain, or repeated resets — the unit may need replacement (typical life is 8–15 years).
