Gutter & Downspout Cleaning Checklist
A repeatable checklist for clearing gutters twice a year to prevent water damage and ice dams.
Exterior Seasonal Water
Clean gutters at least twice a year — late spring and late fall. Clogged gutters cause water damage, foundation issues, and ice dams.
Checklist
- [ ] Stable ladder on level ground (have a helper)
- [ ] Heavy work gloves
- [ ] Garden trowel or gutter scoop
- [ ] Bucket or tarp for debris
- [ ] Hose with spray nozzle
Steps
- Scoop out debris by hand or with a trowel, working from the downspout end backward.
- Flush with a hose toward the downspout to check flow.
- Clear the downspout — if water backs up, the clog is inside; use a plumber's snake or hose from the bottom.
- Check for sagging or loose brackets and tighten them.
- Inspect joints for leaks; re-seal with gutter sealant if needed.
- Confirm water exits at least 3–5 feet from the foundation (add a downspout extender if not).
Safety
Never lean a ladder on the gutter itself — it can bend and the ladder can slip. Rest the ladder on the roof edge or use a stand-off stabilizer.
