Installing a Smart Thermostat
Compatibility check, the C-wire question, and a safe install walkthrough.
HVAC Efficiency Smart Home
A smart thermostat can save 8–15% on heating and cooling by scheduling and learning your habits. But compatibility matters before you buy.
Before you buy: check compatibility
- Look at your current thermostat wiring. You need a C-wire (common) for most smart thermostats. No C-wire? Some units include an adapter, or you can run one.
- System type: most work with 24V forced-air systems. Heat pumps and multi-stage systems need a compatible model.
- High-voltage baseboard heat? Smart thermostats generally do not work — keep a line-voltage-rated unit instead.
What you need
- Screwdriver, wire labels (or tape + pen)
- A phone/camera to photograph the wiring before you disconnect
Install steps
- Turn off the breaker to your HVAC system — confirm the thermostat goes dark.
- Photo the wiring and label each wire with its terminal letter (R, W, Y, G, C…).
- Remove the old thermostat and its backplate.
- Mount the new backplate level on the wall.
- Connect wires to the matching terminals (use the photo and labels).
- Attach the display and restore power.
- Follow the app to set schedule, Wi-Fi, and preferences.
After install
- Set a schedule with setbacks (cooler in winter overnight, warmer in summer when out).
- Use geofencing to switch to away mode automatically.
When to call a pro
If your system has unusual wiring, a heat pump without a clear C-wire, or the unit won't power on after install — an HVAC tech or electrician can add a C-wire in under an hour.
